Hugo & Typography
I decided to build my site using Hugo. I’ve also transferred my posts from my previous Github/Jekyll powered blog. I just didn’t like the fact that Jekyll is built for a dying language - Ruby.
I’m quite pleased with my site. Hugo is nice and easy to work with and it allows for endless customisation. I built my site atop of this theme - hugo-theme-hello-friend-ng - before customising it. I’ll add my theme to Github once I’ve cleaned it up a bit. I might see about adding it to the Hugo themes collection too.
I spent a ludicrous amount of time deciding what fonts to use. I eventually decided on using the IBM Plex family, both the monospaced and sans-serif variants. I’ve used the monospaced fonts for the body of my site as I wanted to get that typewriter/computer code feel. I also went with Goudy Bookletter 1911 for the title font, which I originally found here - The League of Moveable Type.
Some resources that I used when putting my site together -
- coolers - a cool site that I used to select colors of my site, hours of fun to be had
- 100 Days of Fonts - a nice collection of font pairings/layouts
- The Type Directors Club - an article on why IBM Plex won The Type Directors Club - Judges’ Choice badge in 2018
- IBM Plex - the official showcase website
